Real-world consumption in winter on the highway is 20-40% higher than WLTP, which is why the planner adds a seasonal penalty. Precondition your battery and arrive at the charger with ~10% for the fastest charging curve.
Road-trip tips
- Charge to 80% at fast chargers. The 80-100% top-up is 2-3x slower — skip it unless you need the range.
- Precondition before charging. Warming the battery en route makes charging up to 40% faster in winter.
- Slow down on the highway. Dropping from 130 to 110 km/h adds ~15% range.
- Plan stops at chargers near amenities. Eat, coffee and bio break while it charges.
- Check charger reliability. Have a backup station within 20 km on long trips.

Frequently asked questions
How many charging stops do I need for a long EV trip?
It depends on your EV's range, speed, temperature and route. On a highway at 120 km/h in winter, plan a stop roughly every 250–350 km. Use our trip planner to estimate stops, charging time and cost for your exact car and route.
How much time does fast charging add to a road trip?
Most modern EVs charge from 10–80% in 20–40 minutes on a 150+ kW fast charger. Over a 1,000 km trip you'll typically spend 45–90 minutes total charging across two or three stops.
Is it cheaper to drive an EV on long trips?
Usually yes, but less so than at home because fast charging costs 2–4x more per kWh than home rates. On a long trip a large EV at 18 kWh/100km costs roughly 50–70% of equivalent petrol, depending on charger pricing.
Should I charge my EV to 100% before a road trip?
Yes for the start of a trip, especially if you have an NMC battery — charging to 100% for a trip you'll use immediately is fine. During the trip, charge to 80% at fast chargers: the last 20% charges slowly and wastes time.
Does cold weather affect trip range?
Significantly. At -10°C expect 20–30% less range than WLTP, plus extra consumption from cabin heating. Our planner applies temperature factors so you get a realistic estimate instead of an optimistic brochure number.
