12V Battery Keeps Dying in My EV

The car is fine when driven, but the 12V battery drains when parked and the car won't wake up.

What causes it

EVs still use a conventional 12V battery for computers and locks. Parasitic drain, cold weather, or an aging 12V battery cause repeated dead starts.

What to do

  1. Jump-start correctly - use the under-bonnet jump points, never the main battery terminals directly.
  2. Check the 12V battery health - if it's 3+ years old, replace it; a weak 12V causes endless phantom faults.
  3. Find the drain - accessories left on, a faulty door sensor, or the car not fully going to sleep.
  4. Close the app properly - some apps keep waking the car, preventing sleep mode.
  5. If it happens weekly, have the charging system checked - the DC-DC converter charges the 12V and can fail.

A healthy 12V battery should let the car sit 2-4 weeks without needing a jump.
