E-Bike Motor Cuts Out Under Load
The motor assists normally then suddenly cuts out on hills or when accelerating hard.
What causes it
Thermal protection, a loose wiring connector, or the battery momentarily sagging under high draw.
What to do
- Check all motor and battery connectors - vibration loosens them. Unplug and firmly re-seat.
- Inspect the wiring for chafing at the handlebars and downtube.
- Update the controller firmware if your brand offers an app update.
- Check battery contacts for dirt or corrosion - clean with contact cleaner.
- If it only happens on steep climbs, it may be thermal cutoff; let the motor cool and avoid prolonged full-power climbs.
When to see a shop
If the motor cuts out even with a fully charged battery and all connectors are tight, the controller or torque sensor may need diagnosis by a professional.
