EV Charging Port Won't Open

The charging flap or port cover is stuck closed and the charging cable won't connect.

What causes it

A frozen latch in cold weather, ice buildup, a failed actuator motor, or debris blocking the mechanism.

What to do

  1. Check for ice - in winter, gently warm the flap with a hairdryer or warm (not boiling) water.
  2. Look for the manual release - most EVs have a pull-cord or button in the trunk to release the port.
  3. Use the app - some brands let you open the flap remotely.
  4. Clean debris - a leaf or grit can jam the latch.
  5. If the actuator failed, you may hear clicking without movement - this needs a dealer visit.

Prevention

Keep the port rubber seal clean and lightly lubricated with silicone spray before winter.
