Loud Fan or Cooling Noise While Charging
The car makes a loud fan or pump noise while charging, sometimes minutes after you plug in.
What causes it
The battery cooling system actively cooling during/after fast charging - completely normal thermal management.
Why it happens
Charging heats the battery. The car runs the coolant pump and radiator fan to pull that heat out. On fast chargers (and even some home chargers in summer), you'll hear it clearly.
What to do
- It's normal - expect fan noise for 5-30 minutes during and after fast charging.
- If it never stops even in mild weather after the session ends, the coolant system may be overworking - check coolant levels at service.
- If you hear grinding from the fan (not just airflow), the fan bearing may be failing.
- In winter, this noise is usually much quieter.
Good to know
Some EVs pre-cool the battery before fast charging too - the noise just before a charge is the system preparing. It's all normal thermal management.
