Electric Scooters
Weak or Squealing Brakes on Your E-Scooter
Brakes squeal loudly or feel spongy, reducing stopping power.
What causes it
Worn brake pads, contaminated rotors, a loose brake cable, or a rear drum brake needing adjustment.
What to do
- Clean the rotor/pads - brake cleaner removes oil and dirt that cause squeal.
- Adjust the cable tension - most scooters have a barrel adjuster at the lever; tighten until braking feels firm.
- Bed in the pads - brake hard from speed a few times on a safe road to seat new pads.
- Check pad wear - if the pads are below 1mm, replace them.
- Check the electronic brake - on dual-brake scooters, a disconnected e-brake wire reduces power.
If braking is dangerously weak
Stop riding and fix it immediately. Check both the mechanical brake and the regen/electronic brake are working.
