Wobbling Handlebar or Stem on Your Scooter
The handlebar shakes and wobbles at speed, feeling unstable and unsafe.
What causes it
Loose folding mechanism, worn steering bearings, or a cracked stem clamp from repeated folding.
What to do
- Check the folding latch - it is the #1 cause. Tighten the clamp bolt to spec.
- Inspect the steering stem bolt at the headset - loose bolts cause play.
- Check the steering bearings - if the headset feels notchy when turning, bearings are worn and need replacement.
- Tighten the handlebar clamp on both sides evenly.
- Stop riding if the stem is cracked - a cracked stem can snap at speed and is not repairable.
When to replace
If tightening does not remove the play and you hear grinding, replace the headset bearings. It is a $15-30 part and a 30-minute job at most bike shops.
