Smart Charging & Solar: Charge When Energy Is Cheapest

You want to charge at night on cheap tariffs or use solar power, but it's fiddly to set up.

What causes it

Most EVs charge when you plug in; smart scheduling moves charging to cheap or green windows.

Set up smart charging

  1. Use your wallbox's app - most modern chargers schedule charging by time.
  2. Or use the car's scheduler - set a departure time and a charging window.
  3. Match your tariff - if you have an off-peak rate (e.g. night), set the window to it.
  4. For solar - some chargers (or apps) auto-start when surplus solar is available.
  5. Avoid 'charge immediately' at peak prices - it's the most expensive way to run an EV.

Example

At $0.15/kWh off-peak vs $0.35/kWh peak, charging 40 kWh overnight instead of daytime saves about $8 per charge - or ~$100/month for a daily driver.

Note

Smart charging also protects the grid - many markets offer incentives or free charging for charging during low-demand hours.
