You want to charge at night on cheap tariffs or use solar power, but it's fiddly to set up.

What causes it

Most EVs charge when you plug in; smart scheduling moves charging to cheap or green windows.

Use your wallbox's app - most modern chargers schedule charging by time.
Or use the car's scheduler - set a departure time and a charging window.
Match your tariff - if you have an off-peak rate (e.g. night), set the window to it.
For solar - some chargers (or apps) auto-start when surplus solar is available.
Avoid 'charge immediately' at peak prices - it's the most expensive way to run an EV.

At $0.15/kWh off-peak vs $0.35/kWh peak, charging 40 kWh overnight instead of daytime saves about $8 per charge - or ~$100/month for a daily driver.

Smart charging also protects the grid - many markets offer incentives or free charging for charging during low-demand hours.
