How much does an EV road trip cost in electricity?
A 1,000 km trip at 18 kWh/100km costs $30-50 charging at home rates, or $70-120 on public fast chargers. Petrol for the same trip would cost $120-160.
Is it cheaper to drive an EV than a petrol car on a long trip?
Usually yes, but the gap narrows on fast chargers. At $0.45-0.60/kWh, an EV costs roughly the same as an efficient petrol car; at home rates it's half the price.
How much does charging add to trip time?
Fast-charging stops add 20-40 minutes per 300-400 km. Over a 1,000 km trip expect 1-2 hours of charging total, which many drivers combine with meal breaks.
Should I use home rates or fast charger rates for trip cost?
On a road trip you'll mostly use fast chargers. If you start fully charged at home and end at a destination charger, blend the rates for an accurate estimate.
