EV Makes Clicking or Clunking Sounds When Starting or Parking
Clicking sounds under the floor or in the front when the car powers on, turns off, or you lock it.
What causes it
High-voltage contactors (relays) physically clicking on/off, and the parking brake or transmission engaging - all normal in EVs.
Normal sounds
- One or two clicks when starting - the contactors closing to connect the battery.
- A click when you turn off or lock - contactors opening.
- A clunk when you shift into Park - the e-transmission or parking pawl engaging.
- A short pump or whir at startup - brake booster pressurizing.
When to worry
- Multiple rapid clicks in a row during driving - a contactor issue.
- A hard thunk when shifting - could be a worn drivetrain mount.
- Any sound followed by a warning light.
What to do
If it's just the start/stop clicks and a clunk into Park, it's completely normal. Record the sound if it changes character and show your dealer.
