EV Range Drops in Winter: Causes and Fixes

What causes it
Cold slows lithium-ion chemistry, cabin heating draws significant power, and cold tires increase rolling resistance.
What to do
- Precondition while plugged in - warm the cabin and battery before unplugging so heating uses grid power.
- Use seat/steering wheel heaters instead of full cabin heat.
- Keep tires at correct pressure - cold air drops pressure and raises consumption.
- Slow down on the highway - drag rises with the square of speed.
- Use Eco mode to limit acceleration and heating.
- Precondition the battery before fast charging to keep charge curves fast.
When to worry
A 20-30% winter loss is normal for every EV. If you lose more than 40%, check tire pressure and heating usage first, then battery health at your next service.
