Electric Car Smells Burning During Fast Charging
A burning smell appears while fast charging, which is alarming and confusing.
What causes it
Usually harmless: new-parts smell, connector heat, or plastic off-gassing. Rarely, a real electrical fault.
First: assess the smell
- Slight 'new car' or plastic smell during charge - normal, especially in a new car.
- Hot cable/connector smell - see the 'Charging Cable Gets Hot' guide.
- Strong, acrid, electrical burning - stop immediately.
What to do
- Stop the session if the smell is strong or accompanied by heat, smoke, or a warning light.
- Inspect the charging port for discoloration, melted plastic, or debris.
- Check the cable and connector on both ends for damage.
- Let it cool and try a different station/cable.
- If it recurs, book a dealer inspection - don't ignore electrical smells.
Good to know
Slight smells from new rubber seals and connectors dissipate after the first few charges. A persistent or strong smell is not normal - always err on the side of caution.
