EV OTA Updates: What They Do and How to Install

Your EV shows an update is ready, or you wonder what these over-the-air updates actually change.

What causes it

EVs update software wirelessly like phones - fixing bugs, adding features and improving range/charging.

What OTA updates change

  • Charging curve improvements - faster or more consistent fast charging.
  • Range and efficiency tweaks - better thermal management and consumption.
  • Bug fixes - infotainment, apps, driving aids.
  • New features - music apps, driver assists, UI changes.

How to install

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi at home or a reliable hotspot for large updates.
  2. Schedule the update - most cars let you pick a time; many require the car parked.
  3. Keep the battery above ~20% - updates shouldn't run on a low battery.
  4. Some updates need a service visit - the app/car will tell you.

Good practice

Install updates within a week. They regularly fix real bugs - delaying them means living with known issues.
