How to Maintain Your Lithium Battery (Any EV Type)

Batteries across all EV types degrade - here's how to make yours last as long as possible.

What causes it

Heat, full-state storage, deep discharges, and fast charging are the main factors in lithium degradation.

The golden rules

  1. Avoid extreme heat - the #1 battery killer. Don't charge in direct sun or after a hot ride.
  2. Don't store at 100% or 0% - store at 30-80% for weeks or months.
  3. Avoid deep discharges - charging from 20% is healthier than from 5%.
  4. Limit frequent fast charging - for daily use, slow charging is gentler.
  5. Keep it dry - water and connectors don't mix.

Seasonal storage

  • Charge to ~60%, store in a cool place, top up every 4-6 weeks.

When to replace

When usable capacity drops below ~70-80% of new (usually 5-8 years for good care), replacement is worth considering - battery prices keep falling.

Follow these rules and a quality battery easily outlasts the rest of the vehicle.
