How to Use Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Safely
You want to power appliances or tools from your EV but aren't sure how, or what's safe.
What causes it
V2L ports provide up to ~3.6 kW AC; misuse (high-power tools, poor extension leads) can trip breakers or damage equipment.
How it works
- Check your car supports V2L - many IONIQ 5/6, EV6, F-150 Lightning, BYD and Rivian models do.
- Use the adapter in the car (usually a Type 2-to-socket or a port in the cabin/trunk).
- The car exposes a normal AC socket - plug in standard appliances.
Safety rules
- Check power limits - most V2L supplies 3.6 kW (about 15A). A kettle (2kW) or fridge (200W) is fine; a welder or heavy power tool is not.
- Use a good extension lead - 16A rated, fully uncoiled (coiled leads overheat).
- Don't run the battery too low - keep 20%+ while powering things.
- For house backup (V2H), use a certified system - never back-feed a house socket.
- Keep the port dry - rain and electronics don't mix.
Good uses
Camping power, tailgating, charging an e-bike, and emergency home backup for a fridge or heater.
