Electric Cars
Is That Weird Whining Noise From My EV Normal?
The car emits a high-pitched whine or hum under acceleration that wasn't there before.
What causes it
Most likely the electric motor or cooling pump - normal in EVs. But a grinding or metallic sound can signal a real issue.
Normal sounds
- A soft whine on acceleration - electric motors and their gearboxes naturally hum.
- A periodic click or buzz - contactors and relays switching.
- Gurgling or fan noise - battery cooling system working hard.
When to worry
- Grinding or metallic scraping that changes with speed - get it checked.
- Loud bearing hum that persists after the car is warm.
- Any noise followed by a warning light.
What to do
Record the noise with your phone (dealers love audio evidence), note when it happens (cold start, full power, regen), and book a service if it isn't the usual motor whine.
