Ran Out of Charge: What to Do When Your EV Stops
The battery hits 0% and the car slows or stops before you reach a charger.
What causes it
Misjudged range, hilly terrain, cold weather, or a charger that turned out to be out of service.
In the last 10%
- Slow down - 80 km/h beats 120 km/h by 30-40% consumption.
- Turn off climate - heating and AC are the biggest energy hogs.
- Switch to Eco mode and use the map's nearest-charger navigation.
- Drive smoothly - no sudden acceleration.
If the car stops
- Pull over safely and put on your hazard lights.
- Call roadside assistance - most EV manufacturers and insurers offer flatbed recovery; never tow an EV with the drive wheels down.
- Some EVs have a reserve - a few models let you access a hidden emergency range after 0%, but don't rely on it.
Prevention
Keep at least a 20% buffer in winter, plan charging stops at 10-15% remaining, and always have a backup charger within 30 km.
