Should You Charge Your EV to 100%? LFP vs NMC Batteries
Conflicting advice about charging to 100% leaves owners unsure what limit to set.
What causes it
The answer depends on chemistry: LFP batteries (BYD, some Tesla base models) prefer 100%; NMC/NCA batteries (most others) degrade faster at 100%.
LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate)
- Charge to 100% regularly - it's safe and actually recommended to keep the BMS calibrated.
- Found in: BYD (Blade), Tesla RWD base models, MG4 SE, many Chinese EVs.
- How to know: check your car's specs or battery label for 'LFP'.
NMC / NCA (Nickel Manganese / Nickel Cobalt)
- Keep daily limit at 80-90% - 100% daily accelerates degradation.
- Charge to 100% for road trips - occasional full charges are fine.
- Found in: most European and Korean EVs, long-range Tesla models.
How to check your chemistry
- Look in the car's app or settings - many brands display the battery type.
- Check the owner's manual specs.
- If unsure, use 90% as a safe daily limit for any chemistry.
