Efficiency
A combustion engine wastes about 70-80% of its fuel's energy as heat. An electric motor converts 85-95% of battery energy into motion. There is simply no contest.
Torque and power delivery
Electric motors deliver 100% torque from zero rpm. That is why EVs feel quick off the line. Combustion engines need to spin up to build power.
Maintenance
An electric motor has one moving part. No oil changes, no timing belts, no spark plugs. Brake pads last far longer thanks to regenerative braking.
Longevity
Electric motors routinely outlast engines - 500,000+ miles is common. The battery is the component to watch, not the motor.
The honest downsides
- Range and refueling: fuel is everywhere; fast chargers are still growing
- Highway efficiency: EVs lose proportionally more range at high speed
- Initial price: batteries are still the expensive part
The verdict
For almost every use case, the electric motor is objectively superior: simpler, more efficient, more reliable and cheaper to run. The remaining advantages of combustion are fuel availability and upfront price - and both are shrinking fast.
