EV Charging at Home: Wallbox vs Regular Socket

Home charging is the #1 reason people love EVs. Here is how to decide between a regular socket and a wallbox.

Charging speed

  • Regular socket (Level 1): ~3-5 miles of range per hour
  • Wallbox (Level 2): ~20-40 miles per hour

For an overnight top-up, a regular socket is often enough. If you drive a lot, a wallbox is transformative.

The safety question

Regular sockets are NOT designed for continuous high load. Charging overnight on a cheap socket can overheat the wiring - a real fire risk. If you use Level 1 charging, use a high-quality socket on its own circuit.

Cost

A good wallbox costs $400-$900 plus installation ($200-$800 depending on your panel). Many countries offer rebates that cover most of it.

The verdict

If you can afford it, install a wallbox. It charges faster, is safer and many EV manufacturers offer big wallbox discounts at purchase time. If you only drive short daily distances, start with the regular socket - just make sure the wiring is up to the job.
