E-Bike Battery No Longer Holds a Charge
Your battery now lasts half the distance it did when new, even after full charges.
What causes it
Normal lithium-ion degradation - most e-bike batteries lose capacity after 500-800 full cycles.
What to do
- Test with the app or display - confirm the battery health percentage.
- Try a full calibration cycle - drain to 10%, charge to 100%, repeat once. This can recover 5-10% for some BMS units.
- Store properly - keep at 30-80% charge in a cool place; never store fully charged or fully empty for long periods.
- If under warranty, contact the brand - most offer 2 years on batteries.
- Plan for replacement - a replacement battery typically costs $300-800 depending on the bike.
Prevention for the next battery
Avoid full discharges, don't charge to 100% unless needed, and keep the battery out of freezing heat. These habits can double battery lifespan.
