E-Bike Motor Overheating on Long Climbs
The motor feels hot or cuts out on long, steep climbs in hot weather.
What causes it
Sustained high torque on hills generates heat; motors and controllers thermally throttle to protect themselves.
Why it happens
Climbing puts maximum strain on the motor. In hot weather, the motor and controller can hit their thermal limit and reduce power to avoid damage.
What to do
- Take breaks on long climbs - a 5-10 minute rest lets the motor cool.
- Pedal more on the climb - shift to a lower gear and contribute power.
- Drop the assist level on steep, long gradients.
- Check the motor vents - mud and debris block cooling; keep them clean.
- Avoid stopping mid-climb at full power - the stall current heats the motor fastest.
If it keeps cutting out
On repeated climbs in 30°C+ heat, some thermal limiting is normal. If it happens on flat ground or in mild weather, the controller or a connector may be failing - get it checked.
