E-Bike Motor Grinding or Clicking Noise
The hub or mid-drive motor makes grinding, clicking or scraping sounds.
What causes it
A worn bearing, debris in the motor, loose spokes, or a chain rubbing the derailleur.
What to do
- Isolate the noise - lift the rear wheel and spin it; if the motor is silent off-load but noisy riding, it's likely the drivetrain.
- Check spokes - loose or broken spokes click under load.
- Check chain alignment - a mis-indexed rear derailleur grinds.
- Mid-drive bikes - check the motor mount bolts and bottom bracket play.
- Hub motors - if the bearing sounds rough when spun by hand, the motor needs service.
Safety note
A motor that suddenly makes a loud grinding noise could have a failing bearing or gearbox. Stop riding and have it inspected to avoid catastrophic failure mid-ride.
