Electric Motorcycle Belt or Chain Maintenance

You don't know how to look after the belt or chain on your electric motorcycle.

What causes it

EV motorcycles use belts (Zero, LiveWire) or chains (Energica, Super Soco) that need simple but regular care.

Belt drive (Zero, LiveWire, BMW)

  1. Check tension - about 1/2 inch of deflection at the middle of the top run.
  2. Keep it clean - wipe off dirt; don't oil a belt.
  3. Check for fraying or cracks - a damaged belt can snap at speed.
  4. Replace every ~20,000-30,000 km or when worn - cheaper than a chain conversion.

Chain drive (Energica, Super Soco)

  1. Lubricate every 500-1,000 km or after wet rides.
  2. Check tension - about 1-1.5 inches of play at the middle.
  3. Check for stiff links and wear - a stretched chain also wears the sprockets; replace as a set.

Both

Keep the drivetrain aligned (belt/chain tracks straight) and check sprockets/pulleys for wear. A well-maintained belt or chain keeps power delivery smooth and efficient.
