Electric Motorcycle Makes No Sound — Is It On?
The bike feels like it isn't running because there is no engine sound, and riders panic that it's dead.
What causes it
Electric motorcycles are silent by design. The motor runs with no noise, which surprises new riders and pedestrians.
How to confirm it's on
- Check the display - a ready/run indicator (often 'READY' or a green light) means it's live.
- Squeeze the brake - on most bikes the motor only engages with a brake or side-stand interlock released.
- Twist the throttle gently while holding the brake - the bike should pull.
Safety tips
- Use the pedestrian speaker or sound mode if fitted (many EVs have one for cities).
- Assume pedestrians can't hear you - ride defensively in traffic.
- Learn the interlock sequence (side stand, kill switch, brake) that must be met before the motor arms.
If the display shows a fault when the interlock is satisfied, check the side-stand switch and kill switch - the two most common causes of a 'dead' EV motorcycle.
