Electric Scooters

E-Scooter Loses Power on Hills or Under Acceleration

The scooter slows dramatically or cuts out when climbing hills or accelerating hard.

What causes it

Thermal protection in the motor/controller, a sagging battery under high load, or low battery remaining.

What to do

  1. Check battery level - below 20%, power is often reduced to protect the battery.
  2. Let it cool down - after a fast ride, thermal limiting kicks in; stop for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Check for voltage sag - an old or cold battery drops voltage under load, limiting power.
  4. Update the controller firmware if available - power delivery is often improved.
  5. Kick-assist on steep hills to reduce motor strain.

If it happens on every hill

The battery may be aging and needs replacement, or the controller is failing. A battery capacity test at a service shop will tell you.
