Buying your first e-bike can feel overwhelming. This guide cuts through the jargon.
Step 1: Pick your legal class
- Class 1: pedal assist to 20 mph
- Class 2: throttle, max 20 mph
- Class 3: pedal assist to 28 mph
Know what is legal in your country or state before anything else.
Step 2: Motor placement matters more than power
- Hub motor: cheap, simple, good for flat cities
- Mid-drive motor: uses your bike's gears, climbs hills better, feels natural - ideal for commuting and hills
Step 3: Battery capacity is your range
Batteries range from 300 to 750 Wh. A 500 Wh battery typically gives 30-50 miles depending on assist level. Buy the biggest battery you can afford - you cannot easily upgrade later.
Step 4: Choose the right frame
- Step-through: easy to mount, great for city errands
- Standard diamond: stiffer, better for taller riders and cargo
- Folding: perfect if you combine with transit or have limited storage
Step 5: Test ride before you buy
Ride on hills, not just flat ground. The feel of the assist is very different between brands.
Our recommendation
For most first-time buyers, a mid-drive motor with a 500+ Wh battery in a step-through frame is the sweet spot. It balances price, range and ride quality.
